Finding Joy When the Immigration Headlines Feel Heavy with Stephen and Susan Beck

How do you stay informed about immigration without becoming overwhelmed, angry, or numb? When the headlines keep bringing more fear, policy changes, and stories of suffering, it can feel impossible to look away without becoming indifferent, but just as impossible to keep absorbing it all. And somewhere in the middle of that tension is another question: where do we find hope and even joy when the hard things are still happening?
In this episode, we’re joined by Stephen and Susan Beck, who have spent decades living, serving, and building Christian community across cultures in Canada, Germany, and now Minneapolis. They share what they’ve learned from welcoming immigrants and refugees into their church and home, what their congregation did when people in their community were afraid to leave their homes, and why hospitality is about much more than simply helping someone in need. We also talk about cultural humility, burnout, rest, and what happens when strangers become friends around the same table.
Tune in this week to hear what it can look like to practice hope while circumstances are still difficult, why joy is different from pretending everything will work out the way we want, and how relationships can keep people from becoming categories or statistics in our minds. Stephen and Susan remind us that we don’t have to solve every immigration problem to begin somewhere meaningful. Sometimes it starts by knowing a name, sharing a meal, asking how you can help, and allowing someone else’s life to become part of your own.
