Hope in Action with Tracie L. Morgan and Ashley Glimasinski | Why Churches Struggle to Speak Clearly on Immigration with Rondell Treviño

What does it actually mean to wait on an immigration decision when you have no idea how long the wait will last? A work permit, green card, interview, travel permission, or family reunification can sit somewhere inside what Ashley calls the “nebulous black hole” of immigration processing, while life keeps moving outside of it.

In this episode, we’re joined by Mike Valverde, former Associate Director of Field Operations for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Mike takes us behind the scenes of what happens after an immigration application is filed, why so much of the processing time is simply waiting for a human to reach the case, how applications move through USCIS, and why two seemingly similar cases can take very different amounts of time.

Join us this week to learn what’s really happening while an immigration case is pending, why delays are about much more than a number on a processing-time website, and what Mike believes could make the system faster and more efficient. We also explore the spiritual weight of uncertainty, why hope is different from prediction, and what it can look like for Christians and communities to wait with someone instead of simply telling them to wait.

What You’ll Learn from this Episode about the Immigration Waiting Game:

  • What happens behind the scenes after an immigration application is submitted to USCIS.

  • Why most processing time is spent waiting rather than actively reviewing a case.

  • What can cause two similar immigration cases to move at very different speeds.

  • How policy changes and officer discretion can affect the immigration process.

  • What Mike wishes more people understood about USCIS employees and the responsibility they carry.

  • Why immigration delays can affect work, travel, family reunification, and major life decisions.

  • The difference between offering false reassurance and offering honest hope.

  • Practical ways churches, friends, and communities can support someone through a long season of waiting.

About Us

FINAL (2).png

We started this podcast because friends and neighbors were coming to us saying, “I’m seeing all these headlines about immigration, but I don’t really understand what’s going on.” They didn’t have personal connections to immigrants or a legal background—just a sense that something wasn’t adding up. Those conversations showed us a real need for honest, accessible education about immigration law in the Christian community. That’s why we’re here: to make sense of the noise and bring clarity where it’s needed most.
